a vida portuguesa

in porto i was shown to one of the most beautiful shops i've ever seen.
'a vida portuguesa'

it's a little bit like liberty in london ( though smaller )
it's just an amazing building with a fantastic interior and the products it stocks...
well, if like me you like your things to come nicely packaged, then this is the shop for you.

here's a view from the first floor landing, looking down at the ground floor.

the best view is this one... from the ground floor looking up the stairs

the whole back wall is covered in ceramic swallows

not bad !

now a few nicely packaged products from the shelves...
a few bars of soap. fair enough.

woah... did you ever see toothpaste in better packaging ?

i'm not sure what these things are, maybe face cream or something ?
but it seems to be packaged in vintage tins.

never mind the wood polish
look at the old advert. the maid admiring her reflection in the shiny wooden floor
and the old guy in the doorway just about to shout at her... perfect !

probably the best notebooks i've seen in a long while
wood... good.

sweet pencil display

and if you need to 'work it out with a pencil' check out how they're sold...
packaged individually. genius !

less packaging on the babies though... they're just piled in a bucket
hmmm...

also in a bucket, some toy planes
plastic bodies but with really viciously sharp tin wings.
hardly safe for kiddies.

the shop also sells food and sweets and things. have a butchers at the
packaging on these cough sweets...
have you ever seen 4 people hacking away like that ?

i like that they thought it wasn't enough to just print on the words 'cough sweets'

so they put on some illustrations of the portuguese olympic coughing team just to
hammer it home what was inside the packets... portuguese genius !

the shop also had a book department that made me want to buy every book.
you know... all the covers were the most beautifully and stylishly illustrated
covers you could hope to see.
oh and it sold some decent prints too. this was my favourite...
new friends indeed.

so trust me on this... if you're ever in porto, check it out.
