adidas superstars 35th anniversary upper playground editions

here's the heat i should have been packing when i had a shoot in
wales a little while ago...

adidas superstars made in collaboration with upper playground
i guess these are maybe 5 years old now. i think the adidas superstars 35th
anniversary was when i first got properly started into collecting trainers...
you know, when i first bought trainers to put on a shelf and to look at,
rather than to wear.
the 35th anniversary edition drops were also the first time i queued in line to
buy trainers, standing in the freezing cold outside the adidas originals store in
covent garden for hours before the place opened... cold times !

funnily enough the upper playground editions were the first kicks i ever bought
two pairs of... one to wear and one to keep box fresh.

i wanted these because firstly, i liked the design, and secondly because i
was a big fan of upper playground. i'd been to san francisco a few times just
previous to these bad boys dropping and i very much liked what upper playground
were doing with clothing, music and art. even now, there's not really another brand
out there who do what upper playground do.

anyway, let's get into the shoes...
the tongues on these are padded. i think they're known as superstar 80's
( the original superstars had thin tongues )
nice 35th anniversary branding on the tongues i suppose, but personally
i thought the picnic table cloth pattern was so good, i'd have liked to see it
on the whole tongue and not have the adidas label in the way.

these have upper playground dubres, showing the walrus logo
the outsole and the shell-toe are in an off white rubber, this is meant to mimic
the aging of the white rubber used on the original shell-toes.

the three stripes are embossed with silver cutlery
and the red parts of the gingham material have alternate trefoils and
upper playground logos printed onto it

the heel tabs and heel strips
are decorated with the letter bbq and an illustration of a bbq which features
a trefoil with the upper playground logo on it.

i know these are not for everybody but they are better looking in real life than in my photos.
they are also quite a rarely seen pair these days.

in a way i wished i'd worn them when i was at the restaurant in wales with the
red checkered tablecloths... but then again, if i'd worn them i'd have to search
out another pair on ebay to keep box fresh wouldn't i ?
