new york story part 7: the vesuvio bakery and a long walk

these photos are nothing much, just a few snapshots from the day i walked
from prince street in soho, all the way back to the hudson hotel on w59th st.

on prince street there's a corking old shop called vesuvio bakery
here's a shot i took of it 3 years ago

here's one i took of it maybe 10 years ago

and another i took of it last year
bad times ! the vesuvio had closed down.
the local shops had t-shirts for sale with 'save the vesuvio' on them
it had been a staple of prince street for years and years.

well i'm pleased to say that as i strolled down prince street the other week,
the vesuvio bakery was back in action
and doing a roaring trade.

nice window display too.
i like one-off places like the vesuvio. part of the reason i've been boycotting
starbucks these past couple of years is to try and give my money to one of a kind
coffee shops. places with an individual touch.

it's a well known fact that the union jack is the best flag in the world.
personally i love flags. i love the colour combinations, the way some countries
make their flags that little bit different too rather than the germany, belgium, holland, france, italy, ireland situation... you know, just three stripes.
i like the way mexico have the eagle and snake on their flag. the way wales
have the red dragon... i could go on.

anyway, though it's not a patch on the union jack or the flag of wales,
the star spangled banner is quite a beauty isn't it ? it's a good design.
i like that the usa seems proud of their flag too. they seem to fly it everywhere.
don't you think we should have more union jacks on show in the uk ?
maybe with the olympics coming up we'll start flying the flag more ?

i don't know who takes most photos of nothing in particular, me or japanese tourists.
if you click on this pic to enlarge it you can hopefully see that the middle girl's
camera looks like an old cassette tape. hmmm...

i like gemma arterton. she seems like a very down to earth, unaffected person.
( i'd very much like to photograph her by the way if anybody out there has a contact ? )
however i can never just call her gemma arterton anymore. an actress i photographed
a couple of years ago referred to her as '---- ----- gemma arterton' and now
every time i think of her name, i think of that prefix... which is a shame.
anyway, gemma seems to be going from strength to strength.
she's now fronting the latest g-star campaign. nice one gemma !

on lafayette street where i was heading to for a coffee, there seemed to be
some sort of fire situation going on.
american fire engines are so kick-ass compared to ours aren't they ?

the coffee shop i was heading for was right opposite the fire engines.
la colombe.
impressive artwork on the walls of la colombe

it's a double height space too. out of the front windows i could see the
firemen doing their thing

while inside, the barista was doing her thing
flat white for marky. boom !

next door to la colombe is supreme. i popped in to look in the mirror

then outside again for another look at the impressive fire engines

less impressive was the fact that they've re-made the film 'arthur'
still, it was a bad enough film first time around, perhaps it'll be better this time ?

i walked up broadway for a while and popped in to have a look at flight club again.
i've never seen so many fitteds

in a shop further up broadway, i've never seen so many tacky souvenirs
it's only when you get home that you think... "why didn't i buy a few of those ?"

i like these syrups
i reckon nicky minaj has them already though.

after the shocking syrups i didn't take another photo until i hit
hale and hearty soups
chicken chilli over rice. magic darts !
