new york observations

london is the greatest city in the world. that's a well known fact.

i've been lucky enough to travel a fair amount with work and holidays and in my opinion only two cities come close to taking away london's title as the best city in the world.

new york and tokyo.

sometime in the next 7 days i'll publish a post of tokyo observations, but for today here are some of my photos from new york over the years.

these first two photos are from my first trip to manhattan. it's quite amazing to look back at them today. to think about how the skyline has changed since then.
there i was with mrs w, doing the touristy thing. up to the top of the empire state building and taking a few photos. the visibilty wasn't great but there in the distance, two towers.

another view of the twin towers... this was taken from the staten island ferry

ok, so now in no particular order, here are a few shots of mine from the past couple of years.

perhaps my favourite building apart from the guggenheim museum is the flatiron building
rumour has it that it will be transformed into a hotel during the next 10 years.

another nice view is here at columbus circle
i've explained about my love of yellow cabs before haven't i ?

here are some more cabs driving by a familiar new york sight...
steam

trump tower... it's very gold inside
and outside.

the subway system, though not a patch on the london underground system, is easy to use.
and i very much like the signs

another sign i liked was this one on a lamp-post in the lower east side
oh... it's a photo of her duster !

a victory for new york over london is that their fire engines make ours look like toys

the police cars seem a lot more stylish too. nice slogan on the doors.

another common slogan to be found, especially around soho is
"andre the giant has a posse"
or sometimes you'll just spot the obey sticker somewhere

food and drink... you've got to love harry's burritos

also an absolute must is a visit to this place...
yonah shimmel's knishery

my choice is the cheese and jalepeƱo knish
get in !

another tip of mine is to do a bit of people watching while sitting outside cafe borgia on prince street while drinking a hot apple cider ( with cinnamon stick )
genius !

you've also got to try a hot dog from a street vendor
i don't get the pretzel thing though.

breakfast is important and my favourite establishment is the flame diner
( a one minute walk from the hudson hotel )
number 8 for me please. i'll have the eggs poached, wholemeal bread, orange juice and coffee... boom !

talking of coffee... this little place did magic coffee
cracking window display too. what the what ?!

shopping is a big thing in the big apple and three of my favourite shops are...
1. dave's quality meat
me jackie and jess chanced upon dqm the very first week it opened, maybe 6 years ago.
it's now one of the major players in manhattan. well played dave and chris.

2. anewyorkthing
a tiny little joint selling great tees, sweatshirts, hats and cds.

3. flight club
well, if it's good enough for god...

and finally, two pics i took wandering down broadway to times square one night

outside the letterman theatre

nice reflections of the neon lights

and more neon at times square
with a cop on horseback keeping an eye on things.

it's not london, but new york is pretty good !
